SUMMARY:Bruce Bernhart
DESCRIPTION:Bruce Bernhart has played in several bluegrass bands at the Steele County Fair over the past 35+ years\, plus various other county fairs across south-central Minnesota. \n\n\n\nBruce has also been featured playing mandolin on a number of CDs recorded by bands he’s been a part of since the early 90’s. Prior to the mandolin\, Bruce had been strumming the banjo and bass. Since then\, Bruce has mastered the lost art of flatpicking old time fiddle tunes on the guitar with no amplifier and no microphone.

SUMMARY:Charlie Parr
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a night of amazing music with Minnesota based Smithsonian Folkways Recording Artist Charlie Parr! He will be performing live at Mineral Springs Brewery. Witness Charlie’s unique foot stomping style of blues\, folk and Americanna. This brewery setting in Owatonna is one of smallest venues on Charlie’s current tour. This is an event you won’t want to miss! Get your tickets before they sell out. \n\n\n\nIn the music of Charlie Parr\, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist\, songwriter\, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows\, writing and rewriting songs as he plays\, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him\, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition: “I feel like I stand on a lot of big shoulders\,” he said in an interview. “I hope that I’ve brought a little bit of myself to the music.” \n\n\n\nWith a discography simultaneously transcendental in nature and grounded in roots music\, Charlie Parr is the humble master of the 21st century folk tradition. Parr started recording in Duluth in 2002\, where he lives today. Life in the port town on Lake Superior has a way of bleeding into his work the same way his childhood in Austin\, Minnesota does. Parr self-released his debut album\, Criminals and Sinners\, and did the same for his sophomore album 1922 (2002). With growing popularity abroad\, Parr signed with Red House Records in 2015\, where he recorded break-out albums Stumpjumper (2015) and Dog (2017). Parr’s music has an overwhelming sense of being present and mindful\, and his sound is timeless. \n\n\n\nParr’s mastery of his craft is only more apparent when contextualized within the history of folk tradition of which Parr has dedicated his practice The land and lives around and intersecting with Parr have always influenced him\, from the hills and valleys of Hollandale\, Minnesota to the Depression-era stories from his father. Parr strives to listen to everything: “I don’t see that I’d ever be capable of creating anything if it weren’t for these inspirations and influences\, books and music as well as the weather and random interactions with strangers and animals. So\, the well never runs dry as long as my eyes and ears are open\,” Parr said in a 2020 interview. Before he was even 10 years old Parr was rummaging through his father’s record collection—sometimes drawing dinosaurs on the vinyl sleeves—and listening to country\, folk\, and blues legends\, many of whom are staples in the Folkways catalog. When Parr sings and plays his resonator or 12-string\, you can hear influences like Mance Lipscomb\, Charley Patton\, Spinder John Koerner\, Rev. Gary Davis\, and Dock Boggs. This is especially true in his playing\, when\, after a diagnosis of focal dystonia\, Parr turned to greats like Davis\, Doc Watson\, and Booker White for two-finger picking inspiration. Gifted a 1965 Gibson B-45 12-string by his father\, Parr has never had a formal lesson and learned by to listening records and watching musicians he admired. \n\n\n\nParr’s first album with Smithsonian Folkways\, Last of Better Days Head (2021)\, foregrounded his lyrical craftsmanship and sophisticated bluesman confidence\, with spare production highlighting Parr’s mastery of guitar and elevating his poetry. Last of Better Days Ahead is a portrait of how Parr saw the world in that moment\, reflecting on time and memories that have past while holding an enduring desire to be present. In his 2024 release\, Little Sun\, Parr weaves together stories celebrating music\, community\, and communing with nature. Putting forth an ambitious and raw album that exemplifies the best of Parr’s sound: a blend of the blues and folk traditions he continues to carry with him and the steadfast originality of a poet.

SUMMARY:Fred the Bear
DESCRIPTION:Fred the Bear is a classic rock/alternative band known for their rich harmonies\, emotive dynamics and original songs. FTB’s music reflects on life’s promises and disappointments through personal crafted lyrics and driving rhythms.  Mixed within their originals is a blend of music from other Midwest artists\, currently touring groups and classic bands.  \n\n\n\nTheir name and their drive for a great live sound is a tribute to Bruce “Fred the Bear” Eschler.  At his bar\, the “Bear’s Den”\, you could always count on a stiff drink and one heck of a party\, with the music crankin’ all night.  So they play tribute to the man who provided them a first glimpse into the true energy of live music …. Fred the Bear.

SUMMARY:The Gated Community
DESCRIPTION:In 2006 South Asian-American Yale graduate and political activist Sumanth Gopinath started a country/bluegrass band in Minneapolis called The Gated Community. Influenced by his dad’s classic country record collection and modern Americana bands like The Flatlanders\, the band mixes folk\, bluegrass and country music with a raw\, rock edge. \n\n\n\nBorn in Chicago\, Sumanth’s family relocated to Slidell\, Louisiana when he was nine. “At first\, my brother and I hated the place. We consciously decided not to adopt southern accents\, but we were of course surrounded by them\, and by contemporary country music\,” he recalls. Later\, as a grad student at Yale he fell under the musical mentorship of fellow graduate student and Chapel Hill\, North Carolina country/bluegrass veteran Rob Slifkin\, who introduced him to the music of classic Americana artists. Sumanth’s songwriting quickly blossomed in country music—a genre he’d shunned since his days in Slidell. “Playing a form of country and getting to ‘play southern’ became a form of therapy\, a way of dealing with all of the unpleasant bullying\, racism\, and social dislocation that I experienced while growing up in Louisiana.” \n\n\n\nIn 2005\, Sumanth moved from New Haven to Minneapolis to begin working as a professor of music theory at the University of Minnesota. There he would meet fellow faculty members and grad students with whom he would form The Gated Community – a delightfully raucous country band whose lively shows and pointed social commentary quickly gained a cult following in the Twin Cities. Although the band began as a vehicle for Sumanth’s frequently political songs\, the band has evolved over the last 19 years\, expanding in size and scope to include many roots music styles and more personal songwriting. Now featuring six singers\, the band combines professors like Sumanth (vocals\, acoustic guitar\, keyboards) and Beth Hartman (vocals\, percussion)\, and artists from various parts of the Twin Cities scene like Rosie Harris (vocals\, banjo\, cello)\, Paul Hatlelid (vocals\, drums\, acoustic guitar)\, Cody Johnson (vocals\, bass)\, and Nate Knutson (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin). This current lineup has been featured on their last two albums – The Honor and Glory of The Gated Community (2023) and Goodbye Work (2025) – showing the band “stepping out of their Marxist bluegrass novelty band box to create emotionally complex songs” (Dispatch).  \n\n\n\nAbout the interesting mix of people in the band\, Sumanth says “Even though I have strong social ties to the academic world\, I don’t like hanging out only with academics. I prefer to work with people from all walks of life—whether they be union organizers\, office workers\, or full-time artists.” Although the band members’ interests are indeed varied (kids\, dogs\, photography\, books\, cooking\, community organizing)\, they all love music\, travel and exploring historic sights while on the road. \n\n\n\nSumming up the band’s commitment to being a band of and for the people\, The Gated Community continues to stay true to its mission – to pursue the ideals of the American dream as expressed and embodied in the form of country music.

For the next eight years\, Pushing Chain toured the US and Canada\, playing venues big and small and gaining fans the old-fashioned way — face to face\, one at a time. Adam has been featured on radio and television\, and played some of the biggest festivals in the country\, including the 2019 Woody Guthrie Festival and the 2019 Kerrville Folk Festival. \n\n\n\nWith the onset of the 2020 pandemic\, Adam has set out on a solo career. DESCRIPTION:Jeff Reinartz is a singer/songwriter from  Austin\, Minnesota. He’s been performing live for over 30 years and is a veteran of several bands. He is now a solo acoustic performer and has released two EPs that were produced by Scotty Rohr at Zension Studio in Austin. \n\n\n\n\nI believe that we’re here to use our talents and abilities to the benefit of others\, so after 22 years in the corporate world with a Fortune 300 company\, I resigned in 2019 to pursue my music interests full time.

SUMMARY:Martin Zellar - Early Show
DESCRIPTION:If you ask singer-songwriter Martin Zellar what he’s most proud of over his long career\, he answers\, “I guess that I’ve managed to support my family by writing\, recording\, and performing music for over 35 years. It hasn’t always been easy or glamorous\, but I’ve found a way. I still love what I do and can’t imagine doing anything else. And honestly\, the fact that I’m not qualified to do anything else has been a motivator”. The truth is\, Martin Zellar has made his living as a singer-songwriter for over 35 years because he has always reliably delivered what his fans have come to expect from him: quality songwriting and heartfelt performances. \n\n\n\nMartin Zellar first appeared on the fertile mid-80s Minneapolis music scene as the lead singer and songwriter of the alt-country pioneering Gear Daddies. In 1986 the Gear Daddies signed with Gark Records\, a small Minneapolis independent label\, and released a 45rpm record (She’s Happy b/w 2-18) and a full-length LP\, Let’s Go Scare Al. In 1998\, they made the jump to Polygram Records\, at that time the biggest label in the world. \n\n\n\n“We were a small fish in a huge pond\, and it felt like an odd match from the get-go\,” says Zellar. “The label Americana didn’t exist back then\, so we were hard to categorize. Our A&R guy loved us\, but the head of the label made it clear that he had no idea how to market us. When I asked him why they had bothered to sign us in the first place\, he didn’t have an answer. Ultimately\, I think the Minneapolis scene was so hot that labels were snapping up acts for fear of missing out. We were in the right place at the right time and rode the coattails of some pretty incredible Minneapolis bands of that era.”  \n\n\n\nThe Gear Daddies released the critically acclaimed album Billy’s Live Bait in 1990\, toured non-stop\, and performed on Late Night with David Letterman before amicably parting ways in 1992. Zellar then went on to record and perform as a solo artist\, releasing seven more albums on the Rykodisc and Owen Lee Recording labels. His 1993 release\, Born Under\, and his 2012 release\, Roosters Crow\, were especially well-received by critics.  \n\n\n\nIn October 2023\, Zellar released Head West\, his first new offering in over a decade\, to wide critical acclaim.  \n\n\n\nZellar currently resides in Central Mexico with his family.

SUMMARY:Mark Cameron Band
DESCRIPTION:Mark Cameron – Lead Vocals\, Guitar \n\n\n\nMinnesota based singer\, songwriter and guitarist Mark Cameron has been active in live music for over thirty years. Mark began his performing career in the rich folk-rock scene of the early 1970s and brought this influence into several bands he founded during the 1980s and 1990s.  Today his focus is centered on crafting original Blues songs with strong melodies and memorable lyrics. The range of Mark’s material stretches the Blues beyond safe limits with a focus on “foot stompin’\, butt shakin’” music that is built for a live audience. \n\n\n\nAfter five studio releases in the 1980s and 90s\, Mark turned his focus to the Blues with “Life of Illusion” in 2009. The song “Boxcar Blues” became an instant classic and packs the dance floor at live performances every time! In 2011 Mark released the ambitious project “Built to Bust” which featured the hipster-swing classic “Do Lovin’ Right” and the Chicago-Blues romp “Tough All Over”.  2014’s “One Way Ride to the Blues” delivered a raucous Blues anthem “Life is Good When You’ve Got the Blues” and the gospel inspired classic “In This House”. The album “Playing Rough” (2016) was released in both digital and classic vinyl formats\, as were later records “On a Roll” (2019) and “Nasty Business” (2023). The Mark Cameron Band has made hundreds of appearances at nightclubs\, concerts and festivals throughout the country. MCB is consistently a top finisher in Blues competitions and was featured on the 2012 Minnesota Blues All-Stars album. \n\n\n\nKnown as a charismatic front man and soulful guitarist\, Mark engages his audience directly in live performances and delivers his original compositions with a mix of sincerity\, honesty and often a touch of humor. He is equally at home on acoustic or electrified instruments and retains writer/arranger credits on all of his recorded projects. Marks vocal range stretches from basement baritone to full-on growl and his original lyrics draw the listener in and paint a picture of the many worlds within the Blues. \n\n\n\nBILL KEYES – Harmonica\, vocals\n\n\n\nBill Keyes brings killer harmonica and smooth harmonies to the Mark Cameron Band. He has been performing for years at venues and festivals throughout the Twin Cities\, upper Midwest\, and Southeast\, and has been a guest artist on iconic blues and jazz stages around the United States\, including Terra Blues and Arthur’s Tavern in NYC\, Buddy Guy’s and Rosa’s in Chicago\, and the Bourbon Bandstand in New Orleans. Bill has entertained blues fans worldwide with his crunchy harmonica tone and powerful vocals – from Sicily to Spain\, and from Beale Street in Memphis to Chiang Mai\, Thailand!  \n\n\n\nBill joined MCB in 2013\, and after a five year hiatus for further education and cancer recovery\, was thrilled to return to the band in 2024. Based in MN for over 20 years now\, Bill hails from Peoria\, IL\, where he grew up in a musical family that produced a whole band’s worth of professional musicians! Inspired by his brother Dave (Willy DeVille\, Renaissance\, Kevin Osborne Band)\, Bill plays in the style of blues greats Little Walter\, Rick Estrin\, and William Clarke. His harmonica mentors include Joe Filisko\, David Barrett\, and Ronnie Shellist. He credits his vocal coaches Bobbi Miller (blues/pop)\, Ellie Dehn (opera)\, and Andrea Mirenda (performance/movement) for helping him to achieve new vocal and performance heights. His animated stage presence and audience engagement adds energy to every show! \n\n\n\nDan Schroeder – Drums\n\n\n\nDan Schroeder channeled his energies into playing drums from a very young age. His parents soon recognized that the constant tapping of feet and playing on knees was a sign and encouraged him to pursue his passion for percussion. Dan has been playing in bands since 1976\, sharing the stage with an impressive variety of Hall of Fame performers across a wide range of genres. From Don Williams and Carl Perkins to Bret Michaels and Foghat\, Dan has played with the best and is known for delivering inspired performances that get people out of their seats and onto the dance floor! \n\n\n\nIn later years Dan scaled back his full-time performance schedule to focus on raising a family. He soon recognized the family-friendly environment within the Blues and has adopted a whole new family along the way. Passing on his drum skills to the next generation\, Dan has added teaching to his long history as a full time musician. Dan is known for having “the best hair in the Blues” according to Cameron\, and his addition to the Mark Cameron Band has “raised the bar” according to Blues writer Gary Eckhart. \n\n\n\nSheri Cameron – Sax\, Flute\, Percussion\n\n\n\nAsk Sheri Cameron and she will tell you she is not a musician. Ask her husband and band mate Mark and he will tell you that is precisely why she works so well as a member of the Mark Cameron Band: “Sheri does not have a musician’s inflated ego and will do whatever a song needs to sound better\, without going overboard”. \n\n\n\nAfter years of watching her husband play live music and record albums she finally decided: “If I am going to help haul this stuff I might as well play it too!”  Sheri has proved to be a crowd favorite over the past few years as a flute player and percussion guru. \n\n\n\nSheri’s first studio recording was the memorable flute solo on the 1990 release “Can’t Take Another Night.” This song from the CD “Range of Emotion” became a popular song on Minneapolis radio and first brought Sheri to the stage as a member of the 1990’s Minneapolis band “Citizen’s Patrol.” \n\n\n\nToday\, Sheri plays more instruments than the rest of the band put together: sax\, flute\, bongos\, shaker\, guiro\, tambourine\, washboard\, chimes and whatever else a song might call for. Sheri provides female vocal parts and lyrical input in the recording studio as well. She puts the “tasty” in the Mark Cameron Band!
